International artist, researcher, author and teacher of the new contemporary performative practices involving technology since 1994, Isabelle Choinière holds a Ph.D. (2015) in the Philosophy of Integrative Arts from Planetary Collegium, at the Center for Advanced Inquiry in the Integrative Arts (CAiiA), Plymouth University, U.K. She studied under the supervision of Roy Ascott, founder and director of the Planetary Collegium.

She is currently an associate professor at the Faculty of Communications, École des Médias at University of Quebec in Montreal, as well as Lecturer in the Department of Theater at the University of Quebec in Montreal where she teaches a course entitled ‘Dialogue théorique/pratique’ (Interdisciplinary Master Program) (2016), and was an invited research-artist to teach a seminar entitled ‘Emergent Methodologies’ in the Doctoral Program ‘Études et pratiques des arts’ (2015) (University of Quebec in Montreal). She is a member of international research groups such as ‘Hexagram, International Network of Research-Creation in the Media Arts, Design, Technology and Digital Culture’. She is also an active member of the Planetary Collegium Research Network.

Alongside her work as an artist, Choinière’s research has been published by Intellect Press, UK (2006, 2013, 2015), Archée (2016, 2017), the Journal of Transdisciplinary Knowledge Design, Korea (2009) and Cambridge Scholars Publishing, UK (2009). More recent research includes a chapter in The Point-of-Being (ed.) Derrick de Kerckhove, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, UK (2014); publications and translation in Portuguese in CENA: Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (2015) and VIS-Revista do Programma do Pós-graduação da Universidade de Brasilia, Brazil (2017); and activity as a guest chief-editor for a double issue of Technoetic Arts, Intellect Journals, UK, (2015) which examines the consequences and impact of ‘moistmedia’ in the emergence of new artistic practices. In 2018, she will be published by Intellect Books, UK (in English); Les presses de l’Université du Québec, Collection Esthétique, Canada (in French); Les éditions de l’Université de Caldas, Colombia (in Spanish), a book titled: Through prism of the senses: Mediation and new realities of the body in contemporary performance. Technologies, cognition and emergent research-creation methodologies.

Her interdisciplinary and integrative research looks at the development of new models of performativity emerging with technology and alternative approaches to dance involving the somatic. Her main works to date include Communion, Le partage des peaux II (1994-1999); La démence des anges (1999-2005); Meat Paradoxe (2005-2010); Flesh Waves (2013); and Phase #5 (2016), productions that have toured in Europe, Latin America and North America in major festivals and art exhibitions. They have also been referenced as case studies for research groups in universities around the world. In 2014, she was awarded the Prix Reconnaissance Desjardins 2014 for her ‘remarkable career, her innovative work of high artistic quality’. Her research evaluates the relationship of moving bodies to technology by defining a new paradigm of interfaced intercorporeality (intercorporéité). It deals with the development of emerging cognitive, aesthetic and communicative paradigm in the performing arts. Addressed through practices of the body (somatics), her research reintroduces the body and its specific intelligence into an understanding and construction of these proposed relationships. She works on how an ontological transition of the body – through its contact with technology – lead to two emerging concepts: that of the ‘physical/carnal and sound collective body’. Her main research-creation strategy is the development of a specific relationship between the body and technology where technology becomes the activator of a process of sensory-perceptual reconfiguration.
